Q&A With Maggie and Sydni!

Maggie Morrin (she/her)

Q: Where are you from?

A: I’m originally from San Diego, CA but I’ve lived in Philly for four years. And no… I can’t choose “the best coast”. They both have their charm!

Q: What interested you in the IBA?

A: First and foremost, I was drawn to the IBA as a workplace that values all identities and would celebrate my whole-self at work each day. Secondly, the mission of actively working to promote economic development, growth and diversity aligns with my personal values so it felt like a natural yet invigorating fit.

Q: If you owned your own business, what would you do?

A: I’ve really been on an interior design kick recently and I think owning my own business where I could shop for beautiful furniture and create a comfortable yet inspiring space for people would be a dream!

Q: What are you most looking forward to doing?

A: I’m most looking forward to building connections with those in our network and finding creative ways to gain new connections. I’m already inspired by the ways our members and partners show up for our communities and am fueled to support them in my work with the IBA.

Q: Who are your favorite queer icons?

A: Brandi Carlile is at the top of my list. I lean heavily on music to sift through the wide array of human emotions/experiences and her music, story, and the way she carries herself as a gay woman has been instrumental in my life.

Sydni Perry-Anderson (she/her, they/them)

Q: Where are you from?

A: I grew up in Philadelphia, and moved back to the city last summer after graduating from college in St. Louis, Missouri.

Q: What interested you in the IBA?

A: I was drawn to TransWork largely because I wanted to work towards the holistic economic success of trans* and gender-nonconforming people in the present, but also because I believe that TransWork and the IBA can help to provide a layer of economic support and protection that future generations of trans* entrepreneurs and employees crucially need in this political moment. Additionally, the chance to work for a trans-led organization that is so explicitly affirming is amazing and I am so grateful for the support that the IBA and TransWork have already provided. Working to create similarly affirming workplaces for other trans* people motivates me to do the work each day.

Q: If you owned your own business, what would you do?

A: If I were to start a business entirely on my own, I would start a combination tattoo shop and hair salon with a specific focus on providing affirming care in as many forms as possible (from scar cover-ups to haircuts, as well as just cool art) That said, I am not the most entrepreneurially-minded person, and I would want to collaborate with friends of mine on an idea that I can’t take complete credit for, but would still love to be a part owner of; a queer and trans* friendly and affirming nightclub with performances from trans* artists.

Q: What are you most looking forward to doing?

A: I am most looking forward to, and intimated by, hosting events that bring community members together to discuss what is best for them and their businesses. From there, I am also excited by the possibilities around policy advocacy.

Q: Who are your favorite queer icons?

A: Keeping this list as short as I can: Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, SOPHIE, Madonna, Prince, Hayley Kiyoko, Halsey, Laverne Cox, Lady Gaga, Leo Baker, and manicpixie.transgirl on Instragram.
